Prospect in the Spotlight (June 9-10): Marthin Hamlet

Introduction

Thursday, June 8thh, Norwegian light heavyweight prospect Marthin Hamlet will be in action for PFL, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Sam Kei. He will be looking for another win, as Hamlet looks to continue to his winning ways and clinch a 2023 PFL Playoff spot. He represents Frontline Academy, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Wrestling: Hamlet has a high-level background in wrestling, which stems to his amateur days competing at an international level. That background has been brought to his MMA game, where he is known for his strong, powerful takedowns and dominant top position. Once he gets an opponent down, he is known for throwing sledge hammers from top position. His ground-and-pound is nasty, which is how he can earn stoppages. If he doesn’t get the knockout on the mat, he does possess strong submission ability. All but one of his submissions come by way of arm-triangle choke, which is his signature go-to. His most recent win saw him score a 65-second face crank win over Mohammed Fakhreddine. Hamlet is nasty on the mat.

Physicality: Hamlet is a physical brute. He outmuscles and overpowers most guys he gets his hands on. That strength translates on the mat not only in his wrestling, but his grip strength. That’s why when he grabs a neck, the fight is usually over.

Needs Improvement

Grappling from the Bottom: Like most career wrestlers, Hamlet is not comfortable off his back like he is when he’s on top position. Two of his four losses are by submission to Antonio Carlos Jr. and Cory Hendricks. In those bouts, he was out-savvied on the mat, especially when his opponents got the top position.

Outlook

PFL Regular or UFC Midcarder: Hamlet is clearly a talented guy, and with his power wrestling and overall physical style, he has staying power at the top levels of this sport. If he stays with PFL, he will be a season regular who can make the playoff, but will struggle to win the season. If he decides it’s time to go to the UFC, he could be a guy that breaks the top 50% of the division. There are a lot of guys who have wrestling that can match Hamlet, so there may be a ceiling.
