Tuesday, August 22nd, Brazilian flyweight prospect Felipe dos Santos will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Luciano Pereira. He will be looking for another win, as dos Santos looks to impress the UFC brass and score a UFC contract. He represents Chute Boxe, a legendary camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Aggressive Striking: Like a typical Chute Boxe product, Felipe dos Santos is an aggressive, powerful striker who comes forward with reckless abandon. His first two pro wins came by way of knockout. He does not often take a step back and likes to hammer power punches and snapping low kicks. As stated, he is a typical Chute Boxe rep.
Offensive Submissions: On the mat, dos Santos is also a strong grappler with solid ground striking and good offensive submissions. Three of his wins come by way of submission, including by way of guillotine choke, triangle choke and armbar. His variety of techniques coupled with his aggressive grappling style make him a hard time to deal with on the ground.
Needs Improvement
Strength of Schedule: To this point in dos Santos’ career, he has not taken a step up in competition. His best opponent was 5-0 and four of his eight fights were against fighters with no pro fights or under .500. That’s why him taking on 14-fight veteran Luciano Pereira is a major shakeup for dos Santos. It will really be the best test to gauge his ability to this point.
Outlook
UFC Midcarder: I think dos Santos will beat Pereira here, though Pereira is a dangerous knockout artist. Once he wins, I think he signs with the UFC where he will find mixed successes. He is very talented and only 22 years old, so he’s not even in his prime yet and he’s already this good. He will be a fun prospect to watch develop in the UFC.
