Prospect in the Spotlight (Dec 8-9): Flavio de Quieroz

Introduction

Thursday, December 7th, Brazilian flyeight prospect Flavio de Quieroz will be in action for Brave CF, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Edilceu Alves. He will be looking for another win, as de Quieroz looks to clinch Brave CF gold and inch toward a UFC contract. He represents Team Lucas Mineiro, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Introduction

Power Striking: Flavio is a big, powerful flyweight who has dynamite in his hands (and all striking limbs). He is aggressive in the cage and moves forward looking for dog fight, for better or worse. He is not afraid to take one to give one, and seeing as he usually has the power edge, he gets the better of those exchanges. Nine of his fourteen wins come by way of knockout, and many of those came in devastating fashion. He is on a two-fight winning streak right now, both of which come by way of knockout. That includes his most recent win against UFC and Bellator veteran Zach Makovsky, his biggest win to date.

Quality Cage Experience: Flavio has 18 pro fights to date, and despite fighting lesser quality opponents in the beginning of that career, he has not taken many easy fights in recent times. He has lost a couple of his steps up in competition against the likes of Azat Maksum (now in the UFC) and Velimurad Alkhasov (a Brave champion), but those bouts gave him quality cage experience. His aforementioned throwdown with Zach Makovsky represents him taking a step up to the next level.

Needs Improvement

Defensive Striking Lapses: As mentioned, de Quieroz doesn’t mind getting in dog fights, which is okay given his penchant to do damage. However, sometimes that leaves him open in those exchanges and he can get caught. He has lost by knockout to the aforementioned Maksum, who blasted him with a huge one-punch knockout that broke through de Quieroz’s defenses. He as also knocked out back in 2016 in quick fashion when he came out of the gates quickly and got careless in an exchange.

Outlook

Regional Champion/UFC Prelim Fighter: I think de Quieroz is a solid flyweight and has a chance to make a name for himself in this Brave CF title bout. His opponent, Edilceu Alves, is a very experienced and underrated opponent, even if he is 40 years old. This is a make-or-break fight for de Quieroz. If he succeeds, I could see him working his way into the UFC within a year, especially with that Brave belt in his trophy case. If he falters, he could be relegated to the regional scene, where he will be successful, but may never see the big leagues.
