Introduction
Saturday, January 20th, Polish strawweight prospect Ewelina Wozniak will be in action for KSW, where she will be looking to get back into the win column against Aleksandra Toncheva. She will be looking for another win, as Wozniak looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. She represents Czerwony Smok, a lesser-known camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Submission Offense: Wozniak is a solid submission wrestler with strong takedowns and a good top-game on the mat. Three of her wins come by way of submission, with two rear-naked chokes and one triangle choke. Her success requires her to gain top position and be in control on the mat. More on that later…
Power Striking: Wozniak is a powerful striker for a female strawweight and she has some good technique on the feet. She has two knockouts on her record, one a one-punch knockout and the other from a knee to the body. She isn’t going to be confused with Israel Adesanya any time soon, but Wozniak is dangerous on the feet.
Needs Improvement
Submission Defense: …as mentioned Wozniak is a good submission grappler when on top, but her submission defense has been the chink in her armor thus far. Both of her losses came via submission, both rear-naked chokes to top prospect Maria Silva and now-UFC fighter Ivana Petrovic. When playing defense, she’s not nearly as strong on the ground than when she’s controlling things.
Outlook
UFC Preliminary Card Fighter: Wozniak is coming off a loss, so she’s obviously a couple wins away from the UFC, but I think she is somebody who will get there. She’s fought tough competition to mixed results, but she’s still getting better. She’s 30 years old, so she’s in her athletic prime now, so I see her winning a few fights and getting a shot at the UFC. I think she has a ceiling if she makes the roster, but she’s skilled enough to get a crack.
