Prospect in the Spotlight (Mar 8-9): Badmatsyren Dorzhiev

Introduction

Friay, March 8th, Russian flyweight prospect Badmatsyren Dorzhiev will be in action for CFFC, where he will be looking continue his undefeated ways against Israel Galvan. He will be looking for another win, as Dorzhiev looks to inch closer to a contract with the UFC. He represents Evolve Gym, a smaller camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Wrestling: Dorzhiev is a power wrestler and makes no mystery of it. Dorzhiev closes the distance quickly and looks to shoot off his striking. He’s good at grappling against the cage, but once he’s able to get his hands together, he gets his opponents down quickly. Once down, he’s very heavy on top. He also has skill with ground-and-pound, though he doesn’t show much submission offense. He’s also a good counter-wrestler, as he’s able to stave off his opponent’s takedown attempts.

Pressure Fighting: Dorzhiev is a pressure fighter and a grinder. He doesn’t take many steps back and he’s constantly moving forward to make his opponent uncomfortable. He uses that pressure in unison with basic striking combos to shoot for his aforementioned takedowns.

Needs Improvement

Extended Striking Exchanges: Dorzhiev’s striking has continually gotten better every time he’s fought, but extended striking exchanges could leave Dorzhiev more vulnerable. If he gets in the cage with an opponent who is able to stay at distance and keep out of wrestling with Dorzhiev, he’ll have to prove he can bang on the feet for an extended amount of time.

Outlook

UFC Prelim Fighter: Dorzhiev is certainly a skilled fighter and is UFC-ready right now. Luckily, he’s in a division that is shallower on talent than most. Dorzhiev’s wrestling is a major ace in his sleeve, as it’s that dominating. If he continues to improve, especially with his striking, Dorzhiev is going to be a real problem in the UFC, when he gets there. However, there are a lot of good wrestlers in the UFC that could cancel out Dorzhiev’s biggest strength.
