Introduction
Friday, June 14th, Dagestani-French featherweight prospect Daguir Imavov will be in action for Ares FC, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Axel Sola. He will be looking for another win, as Imavov looks to inch closer to a contract with the UFC. He represents MMA Factory, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Wrestling: Like his brother Nassourdine Imavov in the UFC, Daguir is a strong wrestler first and foremost. He likes to get aggressive in walking down his opponent while looking for the shot. Once an opportunity arises, Daguir shoots and gets down his opponents at a high percentage. From top position, Daguir is very aggressive. He has more decision wins than finish, but does have four TKOs and two submissions. He’s a smothering presence from top.
Toughness: Imavov has the classic Dagestani toughness, both physically and mentally. He’s never out of a fight while it lasts and he can get out of sticky situations, including on the feet. That intangible is not only great because he’s never out of a fight, but because it’s intimidating.
Needs Improvement
Bottom Grappling: While Imavov is a strong wrestler, fighting off his back on the mat has proven to be the one weakness he has. He was outgrappled by Mateusz Rebecki, who now graces the UFC roster. Earlier in his career, he was also choked out by Bellator vet Soren Bak. He dominates when he is in control of the grappling, but if he gets put on his back, he will struggle, especially at the next level.
Outlook
UFC Prelim/Midcard Fighter: At 32 years old, Imavov’s window to the UFC is closing quicker than some, especially given that Dana White has been open about fighters closing in on 35 not being guys he looks to put on the roster. That’s why I think if he wins this bout with Axel Sola here, he should get the immediate bump to the roster. His brother has proven to be a threat in the middleweight division and they are similar. Give Imavov a chance to make that same run at featherweight or lightweight, as I think there are plenty of fights for him to win on the UFC roster.
