Introduction
Tuesday, August 20th, American middleweight prospect Torrez Finney will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Cam Rowston. He will be looking for another win, as Finney looks to score a contract with the UFC. He represents Agoge Combatives, an underrated camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Power Striking: Finney is a monster of a man, possessing tremendous power and strength. It’s what makes him a terminator in the cage in terms of stopping power with his hands. Six of his eight wins come by way of knockout, including his most recent bout that scored him another trip to the Contender Series. There, he absolutely flattened M-1 veteran Tyson Jeffries with a one-punch knockout. It went viral on Twitter, showing Finney to be ready for another crack at a UFC contract.
Wrestling: Finney has a strong wrestling base and is very explosive on the takedown. He’s also good grappling against the cage while standing, as he can wear on opponents (see Contender Series fight vs. Yuri Penferov). Once on the mat, his weapon of choice is ground-and-pound, as he throws straight hammers on the mat. He has some submission ability as well, though he has just one tapout on his record (his previous Contender Series bout).
Needs Improvement
Height/Length for MW: For a middleweight, Finney is a tad short at 5’8″ and has shorter limbs that make him need to work hard to get on the inside. I would say the average middleweight is 6’0″ or over. I, myself, stand 6’4″ as an amateur middleweight fighter and many of the guys I see in competition are similar height. Finney will have to use his athleticism and other factors to get on the inside, as he will likely have to work hard to get in striking/takedown distance. And because he’s so thickly muscled, it affects his gas tank, something that could hurt him at a higher level.
Outlook
UFC Midcarder: Finney has looked very strong thus far in his career, and I think he locks up a UFC contract with a win over Rowston. Finney already has a DWCS win under his belt and this is clearly a winnable fight for him. Once on the UFC roster, he will have winnable fights on the horizon, but again, his size and gas tank may limit him a tad. Finney will have a good run on the roster in the foreseeable future.
