Introduction
Friday, October 25th, American flyweight prospect Kevin Fernandez will be in action for LFA, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Josiah Reyes. He will be looking for another win, as Fernandez looks to inch closer to a contract with the UFC. He represents Lamb Striking Acaremy, an unknown camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Introduction
Submission Grappling: Fernandez is a very talented jiu-jitsu artist known for his submission prowess on the ground. He has solid ground-and-pound, but his technical grappling and ability to score the submission finish is his finest point. He is especially skilled with chokes, as all of his submission finishes come that way. His especially fond of the arm-triangle choke and the rear-naked choke. His biggest win was in his most recent fight, where he choked out the respected Joseph Camacho.
Muay Thai Fundamentals: Fundamentally, Fernandez is sound when it comes to the art of eight limbs. He has some regional level Muay Thai fights in the past and has shown solid fundamentals when it comes to combos and movement. I especially like how he mixes his kicks in to his attacks. He isn’t gonna be confused with Anderson Silva any time soon, but it’s a solid part of his game.
Needs Improvement
Matching Up Against Strikers with Takedown Defense: While he has solid striking which is used to set up his takedowns and ground game, Fernandez will have to get better and more comfortable with longer striking exchanges on the feet. As he moves up levels, guys will be stronger in their skills when it comes to wrestling and jiu-jitsu. If that’s the case, he will have to rely more on striking. If he takes on a guy with a higher-level striking skill set that is adept to defending takedowns, Fernandez could struggle a bit to implement his strengths.
Outlook
UFC Prelim Fighter: At just 25 years old, Fernandez is a very good prospect who is going to be someone to watch for the next five years. He is improving from fight to fight and has already taken on some solid competition. He’s got good size and length for a flyweight, which will also aid him in his MMA conquest. He will certainly be a guy that makes the UFC roster, in my estimation. There, we will really get an idea of what level he is on.
