Prospect in the Spotlight (Jan 10-11): Paris Moran

Introduction

Sunday, January 12th, American flyweight prospect Paris Moran will be in action for Fury FC, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Alden Coria. He will be looking for another win, as Moran looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Gracie Barra, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Overall Ground Game: Moran is a very strong grappler and overall ground fighter, whether on top or off his back. When he’s on top, he has effective ground-and-pound, which he can use to score damage in an attempt to finish the fight or open up submission opportunities. He has good choke strength and really cranks on those chokes when he gets them.

Strength of Schedule: Some fighters build up their resumes taking easier fights or “crushing cans.” I can assure you Moran has not done that. Moran has scored wins over the likes of Peter Caballero, Alberto Trujillo and Contender Series vet Nate Smith, while also sharing the cage with Joshua Van (lost by TKO). With that kind of quality experience, it’s easier to judge Moran’s talent than if he were to just be fighting busters.

Needs Improvement

Extended Striking Defense: If Moran is unable to secure the takedown and has to stand for an extended period of time, he can show some holes in his striking defense. His 2022 bout against Joshua Van showed that, as the now-UFC fighter blasted through Moran. That is not shot though, as Van has been known to do that to top fighters. That said, Moran knows his bread is buttered on the ground and that’s where he needs to be.

Outlook

UFC Top-20: Moran is a very skilled fighter in a weight class that is a little shallower on talent than other weight classes. Moran’s clearly a developed fighter and his current Fury FC title run has more than shown he’s UFC ready. He has a tough fight in front of him with Alden Coria, but if Moran can secure the win, he’s more than ready to move up to the next level. I think he can have good success in the UFC.
