Introduction
Thursday, January 23rd, Canadian heavyweight prospect Jag Bhullar will be in action for Battlefield Fight League, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Edison Lopes. He will be looking for another win, as Bhullar looks to inch closer toward a potential UFC contract. He represents WKX Vancouver, a smaller camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Wrestling/Top Game: Bhullar is known for his offensive grappling, as he possesses a strong wrestling game and has consistently controlled his opponents with it. He shoots early and often, getting his opponents wrapped up and on their back. He has a high finish rate when he gets them down. Three of his wins come by way of ground-and-pound, as he throws effectively from the top position. He also is skilled in the submission portion of the game, scoring five tapouts including by north-south shoke and guillotine choke. Bhullar excels when he’s able to fight this way.
Needs Improvement
Size: Bhullar is a physically strong guy, but he’s smaller for a heavyweight. He weighed in at just under 225 pounds for his last fight and he’s 6’1″, meaning he likely has a frame better fit for light heavyweight. A drop to 205 could be proper for Bhullar, especially seeing as they are just as thin on talent as heavyweight.
Strength of Schedule: Bhullar has not faced the stiffest of competition thus far in his career, meaning there are still likely some question marks. The most recognizable name on his resume is Lee Mein, who Bhullar beat in his pro debut, but Mein is well past his prime and advanced in age. The other is longtime journeyman Matt Kovacs, who while experienced, has never seriously sniffed a major promotion.
Outlook
UFC Prelim Fighter: I think Bhullar is a guy that could make it to the UFC and have himself a few fights. I don’t think his wrestling is as strong as many of the guys on the UFC roster right now, nor do I think he wins a striking battle against a good portion of guys. Again, a drop to 205 is likely in order, especially when he makes a major league organization.
