Prospect in the Spotlight (Feb 21-22): Amru Magomedov

Introduction

Saturday, February 22nd, Russian lightweight prospect Amru Magomedov will be in action for UAE Warriors, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Alex da Silva. He will be looking for another win, as Magomedov looks to inch closer toward a UFC contract. He represents Eagles MMA, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Overall Ground Game: Magomedov is a typical protege of the late Abdulmanap Magomedov, father of Khabib Nurmagomedov. He’s an aggressive grinder that closes the distance and looks to make this an dominating ground battle. He has nasty ground-and-pound and the submission game to compliment it. All but two of his wins come by finish, with the rear-naked choke being his finish of choice. He is relentless in getting the takedown and massively difficult to get out from under.

Needs Improvement

Striking Question Marks: Although he has shown the basics on the feet, we don’t know how he will be if he has to spend an extended amount of time on the feet. Like we’ve stated, he’s a typical Abdulmanap fighter in that he’s so dominating in his wrestling on the ground that we don’t get to see his art on the feet. If somebody is able to defend his takedowns and force a standing fight, how will Magomedov respond?

Outlook

UFC Top 15: Magomedov seems to be the next big thing coming out of Khabib’s stomping ground and most scouts agree it’s a matter of time before we see him doing what Khabib and Islam Makhachev have done in the UFC. He’s only 25 years old and already this dominating, which suggests in a few years he may be a guy in title contention in the UFC. On his plate now is a UFC veteran in Alex da Silva. A win could earn him that contract.
