Prospect in the Spotlight (June 6-7): Bilal Hasan

Introduction

Friday, June 6th, American flyweight prospect Bilal Hasan will be in action for CFFC, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Jason Eastman. He will be looking for another win, as Hasan looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Charlie’s Combat Club, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Technical Striking: Most scouts and hardcore MMA fans rave about Hasan’s striking and for good reason. He’s a very technically sound fighter that puts together good numbers and mixes sound fundamentals with some flashy techniques. He has solid boxing and good kicks that he mixes up well. He even has a spinning wheel kick knockout over Jacob Romero, which tops his highlight reel. On top of that, he mixes up head and body shots well. His most recent fight saw him down Brian Hauser with a body shot, showing he’s not only technical but has fight-ending power.

Offensive Submission Game: While Hasan’s striking is the clear crown jewel of his game, he is a solid mixed martial artist that has submission ability as well. He cross trains at AMC Pankration, which is a strong catch wrestling school with great submission wrestling coaches. He only has one submission to his name, but that’s only because he’s been so dominant on the feet. He could prove going forward that his grappling is a strong suit as well.

Needs Improvement

Quality of Opponents/Wrestling Opposition: While Hasan has been incredibly impressive thus far in his short pro career, he has yet to really step up in competition. His most experienced opponent has nine fights, but other than him, five of his opponents have four fights or less. On top of that, we’ve yet to really see him against a seasoned amateur wrestler, the likes of which roam the top ends of all MMA weight classes in the major leagues. Those are question marks that will need to addressed, though he still has time given his age and experience.

Outlook

UFC Prelim Fighter: At just 23 years old and being an exciting flyweight, I have no doubt that Hasan will find his way to the UFC roster at some point. He’s not yet hit his athletic prime and he’s already proven to be a strong fighter with a track record for finishing. He’s already the CFFC Flyweight Champion, having won the belt over Jose Leon and defended it once against Brian Hauser. He has his biggest test here in Jason Eastman, and if there’s a spot still available on Dana White’s Contender Series, Hasan could find himself taking part on a later episode this season.
