Prospect in the Spotlight (Sept 12-13): Lerryan Douglas

Introduction

Tuesday, September 9th, Brazilian lightweight prospect Lerryan Douglas will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Cam Teague. He will be looking for another win, as Douglas looks to score a UFC contract. He represents Bloodline Combat Sports, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Striker/Finisher: Douglas is a very fun fighter with a nasty kickboxing style that is fan friendly and violent. Half of his wins come by way of knockout. He has nasty kicks that do damage wherever he throws them, though his leg kicks are the crown jewel of that portion of his game. He also has dynamite in his hands, possessing one-punch finishing ability as we’ve seen in recent times. His three most recent wins are the three biggest of his career and he did all of three of those by knockout, blasting through Nathan Ghareeb, Javier Reyes and Elijah Johns. This guy can crack chins.

Needs Improvement

Counter-Wrestling: On the other side of his game, Douglas has had his counter-wrestling exposed in his career, which is the biggest weakness in his game that we can see. This was exposed in fights against guys like James Gonzalez and Saifulla Dzhabrailov. He’s also been submitted twice by Chepe Mariscal and Daniel Virginio, showing that he has further weaknesses to expose on the mat.

Outlook

UFC Prelim Fighter/Regional Champ: Douglas is a highly exciting fighter, which is why he is an attractive candidate to be signed by Dana White. White will love his aggressive, violent style. That’s why if he beats Cam Teague, I think Douglas is a shoo-in to get on the roster. There is a ceiling, though. With his wrestling defenses being somewhat of a liability for him and the UFC lightweight division being a shark tank of world class grapplers, he could find some troubles. However, his chaotic style and mayhem, along with his devastating power, could net him some wins on the UFC roster as well.
