Prospect in the Spotlight (Jan 30-31): Freddie Vosgrone

Introduction

Saturday, January 31st, German light heavyweight prospect Freddie Vosgrone will be in action for Oktagon MMA, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Samuel Chavarria. He will be looking for another win, as Vosgrone looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents UFD Gym, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Wrestling/Submission Grappling: Vosgrone has a very strong background in both wrestling and submission grappling, which has been the dominant skill he utilizes in the cage. He has a good level change on his takedown and gets the fight to the mat with impunity. All five of his wins come by way of tapout before the fight can get to the third round. He has two wins by heel hook, two wins by arm-triangle choke and one by rear-naked choke. He also has an extensive pro submission grappling career, where has been extremely successful.

Needs Improvement

Extended Striking Exchanges: For as good as Vosgrone is on the mat, he is still a work in progress on the feet. He has fundamentals and solid basics, but when left on the feet for a while, he could be exposed. Luckily, his wrestling is good enough and his ground control heavy enough that he’s able to get the fight where he needs it to be.

Outlook

UFC Midcarder: Vosgrone is definitely a talented guy with the right skillset to make it to the next level. He proved in his most recent win against Fabio Moraes that he’s ready to take on bigger and better tests. He has an undefeated opponent on his plate in Chavarria, so it could be another solid scalp to add to his trophy case. Vosgrone is a guy that needs to help bring depth to a thin UFC light heavyweight roster.
