Introduction
Friday, February 6th, Cuban-Amaerican bantamweight prospect Sean Mora will be in action for CFFC, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Justin Scoggins. He will be looking for another win, as Mora looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Freedom Fighters, a smaller camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Distance Striking to Offensive Grappling: Mora is a tall, long 135er and he uses his distance well when fighting on the feet. It’s also a great set up for his takedowns and offensive grappling. When he gets down to the mat, he’s very efficient at getting to positions to land damage and look for submissions. He doesn’t make many mistakes on the mat, especially when he’s on top.
Athleticism: Like many of the Cuban fighters in this sport that came out of their motherland, Mora is a fantastic natural athlete with the quickness, explosiveness and agility to gain natural edges in the cage. Those all feed into his striking, wrestling and general movement in the cage that make him such a tough opponent.
Needs Improvement
Counter-Wrestling: The one time I have seen Mora get in a little bit of trouble was when it came to the counter-wrestling in his fight with wrestle-heavy Mo Miller. While Mora turned the tables in the second round, got Miller to his back and choked him out, he showed early on that his defenses can be tested. As he moves up in competition level, that wrestling defense will continually be tested by better fighters.
Outlook
UFC Prelim to Midcard Fighter: Mora has certainly shown in his last two fights that he’s ready for a step up in competition. He scored wins over Contender Series vets Mo Miller and Mark Grey, both of which came by finish. He now gets the biggest test of his career in Justin Scoggins, a UFC veteran with a well-rounded skill set that presents the biggest danger to Mora since he became a pro. A win would definitely prove him ready for the UFC itself. He has the skills to test himself.
