Prospect in the Spotlight (Feb 20-21): Gable Stevenson

Introduction

Thursday, February 19th, American heavyweight prospect Gable Stevenson will be in action for Mexico MMA, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Hugo Lezama. He will be looking for another win, as Stevenson looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Jackson-Winklejohn MMA Academy, a top camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Wrestling: There is no secret to what is Stevenson’s wheelhouse. He’s an Olympic gold medalist wrestler and NCAA National Champion our of the powerhouse University of Minnesota. He will be second-to-none to any opponent he faces when it comes to the wrestling portion of the game. What’s funny is he really hasn’t had to use it in his two MMA fights and dirty boxing match, though obviously we have seen some glimpse.

Power/Athleticism: His athleticism is likely also second-to-none in the heavyweight division, as will his power be. As we’ve seen recently, he has actually used his striking-not his wrestling-in finishing his fights in the cage. He has uncanny power in his hands that can put anybody down.

Needs Improvement

Experience/Small Sample Size: Obviously, he has just two MMA fights and a dirty boxing bout, so his sample size is small. He is still developing and gathering experience, but that will continue to come as he fights. As of right now, there really isn’t a glaring weakness otherwise.

Outlook

UFC Champion: I don’t make this assessment often, so when I do, you know that a fighter is truly special. Given his world class wrestling background, his insane athletic ability, his quick development and his broad stopping power, I don’t think there are many heavyweights in the UFC right now that can beat Stevenson. I agree with Joe Rogan. I think Stevenson runs through most of the roster right now. Given the light nature of talent in the UFC’s heavyweight division, I think you could see Stevenson hoisting UFC gold in the next few years. Remember, he’s only 26 years old right now.
