Introduction
Saturday, March 7th, American featherweight prospect Shane Collins will be in action for 559 Fights, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Amin Gasimov. He will be looking for another win, as Collins looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Team Cobra MMA, an up-and-coming camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Well-Rounded: An experienced amateur turned undefeated pro, Shane Collins has developed a very strong overall game at just 25 years old. He has a strong boxing game that he’s added some solid kicks too, which makes him a threat on the feet. On the mat, he’s a solid wrestler with a good submission base. He’s still netting experience in the cage against better and better fighters, which is showing his development in real time. He’s the champion of A1 Combat and now looking to add to that trophy case with 559 Fights.
Needs Improvement
Extended Striking Affairs: In his most recent loss as an amateur, Collins was on the back foot against a strong kickboxer in George Staines, who stymied Collins’ takedown attempts and kept him on the feet. With that extended affair on the feet against a superior kickboxer, Collins struggled to really make a dent into his opponent. While Collins has solid striking, he’s far better when he’s mixing his grappling with his hands.
Outlook
UFC Midcarder: At just 25 years old and already a solid prospect, I have no doubt Collins will be in the UFC in the near future. He has a solid test in front of him right now in Amin Gasimov, who will challenge his wrestling and grappling and has a good deal of pro experience. If Collins can get by him, he will leapfrog many of the featherweights in front of him in the featherweight prospect line. He certainly is an intriguing prospect.
