Introduction
Sunday, March 15th, American heavyweight prospect Anthony Wint will be in action for Fury FC, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Jamahl Tatum. He will be looking for another win, as Wint looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents MMA Masters, a respected camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Power Wrestler: Wint is an excellent combination of power on the feet and wrestling as a compliment. In the striking department, he has heavy hands that he does great damage with and can finish guys with one punch. In the wrestling department, he’s very explosive in finding takedowns and dominating from the top position. He has heavy ground-and-pound, but also has some underrated submission ability.
Athleticism: Not only was Wint a wrestler in high school, but he was a collegiate and pro football player, checking in at linebacker. That position is one that requires great explosiveness, quickness and athleticism. All of those things describe Wint, who uses those intangibles to be dominant in the cage. He’s one of the minority of heavyweights that has a steel physique but also is a freak athlete, which gives him a major edge.
Needs Improvement
Strength of Schedule: Wint has been dominant thus far, but he has not taken on the highest level of competition. That is slowly changing, especially with his current opponent Jahmal Tatum. However, we have not really gauged his ceiling against a guy that is UFC or PFL level. He had a PFL bout scheduled against Abraham Bably at one point, which would have been a tough test, but that fight fell through. Either way, the Tatum fight should help get him quality experience.
Outlook
UFC Prelim Fighter: The bar for getting into the UFC heavyweight division isn’t high, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take talent to get there. Wint clearly is talented enough to get to the next level, especially given the natural athleticism he has. Athleticism in the heavyweight division can carry you further than most divisions, and I think there are fights he can win at the bottom of the UFC heavyweight division right now. Again, the Tatum fight should be a great indicator of where Wint is right now and if the UFC is ready to call on him.
