Prospect in the Spotlight (Oct 27-28): Karolina Wojcik

Introduction

Friday, October 27th, Polish strawweight prospect Karolina Wojcik will be in action for Invicta FC, where she will be looking continue his winning ways against Danni McCormack. She will be looking for another win, as Wojcik looks to impress the UFC brass by winning the Invicta Strawweight Championship. She represents Xtreme Couture, a respected camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Grinder: Wojcik’s style is pretty simple: get inside and grind on her opponent. Wojcik uses her striking to get close to her opponents and is aggressive in doing so. Once she applies that pressure and gets her opponent on their back foot, she looks to engage in close quarters combat. She will either shoot a takedown or lock up in the clinch, where she thrives. In the clinch, she dirty boxes well and presses her opponent. If she gets takedowns, she will grind on top and wear on her opponents. Most of her wins come by decision, as she grinds out her opponents and outgasses them with her cardio. More finishes would be advisable, but she does win in convincing fashion.

Needs Improvement

Size: Even for a strawweight Wojcik is a smaller 115er, as she stands just 5’2″ and has a shorter reach. That means longer fighters with a good nose to stay out of her shooting range could pick her apart with their boxing. It’s a reason why Wojcik is such a dog trying to get inside, as she knows that being the shorter fighter means she has to fight close.

Outlook

Invicta Champion/UFC Midcarder: Wojcik has already had a crack at the UFC when she competed on the Contender Series last year, where she defeated Sandra Lavado. Despite that win, Dana White passed on her because her performance was not excited enough. Since then, she’s sandwiched a loss with two wins for Invicta, which has earned her this title shot. She has a tough title fight here in Danni McCormack, who has clearly improved since her Bellator days. I think this is a winnable fight for Wojcik, though, if she can get inside McCormack’s striking and wrestle/grapple with her. A win for the title could be in the cards here, as could an eventual landing in the UFC.
