Prospect in the Spotlight (Aug 15-16): Ty Miller

Introduction

Tuesday, August 12th, American welterweight prospect Ty Miller will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Jimmy Drago. He will be looking for another win, as Miller looks to score a UFC contract. He represents Fit NHB, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Striking: Miller is a fun striker to watch, which makes sense because the kickboxing that comes with fighters out of Fit NHB is always something to watch for. Miller is an accurate striker with good power and volume, both of which racks up damage quickly. Two of his five wins, as well as a pro boxing match, have come by way of knockout, showing his hands to be the most lethal of his strikes. Standing opposite of Miller could have violent repercussions.

Size: Miller is a big, tall, long welterweight that uses his size and length well. He establishes his distance and is able to fight effectively in that range. It also makes him tough to get inside of, especially for guys trying to force the grappling exchanges. He’s still young, so he’s filling into his body well, but size is something you can’t teach.

Needs Improvement

Experience/Quality Opposition: It’s not shocking that a young, inexperienced fighter is building up his cage time taking on similarly less-experienced fighters. He’s fought under the LFA and CFFC banners, which are top regional organizations, meaning it’s quality cage time. That said, he’s had two fighters with five fights or more that have over a .500 record, meaning his quality of competition is going to need to increase.

Outlook

Sky is the Limit: Miller is just 25 years old right now. This kid is the definition of a prospect that just needs to develop and really bloom. He has shown to be very deadly on the feet and can grapple as well. Fit NHB is a strong, underrated camp that has churned out fighters like Miller that have been great competitors and are physically/mentall tough as hell. Miller is one of those guys that fits that mold. In 5 years, he’s going to be a very tough welterweight to deal with in the top half of the UFC’s 170-pound division, if he continues on his current trajectory. He has a tough opponent right now in Jimmy Drago, but it’s certainly a fight he can win.
