Prospect in the Spotlight (Dec 19-20): Emily Martins

Introduction

Saturday, December 20th, Brazilian bantamweight prospect Emily Martins will be in action for CFFC, where she will be looking continue her winning ways against Alexa Conners. She will be looking for another win, as Martins looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents American Top Team, a top camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”

Strengths

Grappling: Martins is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter first and foremost. Her takedowns are somewhat average, but she’s good at finding a way to drag the fight down, whether from a straight takedown or from clinching up. She’s a multiple time BJJ world champion, which is explains her ability to end the fight via tapout. All four of her wins have come by way of rear-naked choke, which shows her positional dominance and ability to set traps. Opponents should avoid the mat with Martins.

Needs Improvement

Striking Development: Right now, Martins’ striking is used to set up clinch and takedowns to implement her ground game. Other than that, it definitely needs some development. Forget the fact that Auttumn Norton flatlined her in 10 seconds just three fights ago. Her defense has holes, her offense is basic and if she doesn’t focus on her striking, it will be a liability.

Outlook

UFC Midcarder: At just 21 years old, Martins seems to be a blue chipper who will eventually waltz on over to the UFC. She’s already shown glimpses of brilliance, despite her 10-second loss that briefly derailed her hype train. She’s still a potent grappler with one of the best teams in the world behind her and will only get better. She will focus on her striking, make the necessary improvements and make her mark on the UFC’s bantamweight roster.
