Introduction
Saturday, April 25th, Scottish welterweight prospect Sean Clancy Jr will be in action for Cage Warriors, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Justin Burlinson. He will be looking for another win, as Clancy looks to inch closer to a UFC contract. He represents Higher Level Martial Arts, a solid camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Ground Game: Clancy is a strong grappler on the mat that uses a good combination of ground-and-pound and submission skills to overwhelm opponents. All of his pro wins come by stoppage, with six of them coming by said ground-and-pound or submission. He has a strong variety of submission techniques on the mat, using the rear-naked choke as his go-to move. He has excellent transitions and passes on the mat, which allow him to get to finishing positions.
Hands: On the feet, Clancy also has a strong boxing game as well. He doesn’t kick as much, but he has good, technical hands that seem to be getting better every fight. In two of his last three fights, Clancy has scored stoppages with his on-the-feet striking, downing Andrey Augusto with a nasty body shot and Melvin van Suijdam with a nasty hook combination to the head. He’s getting cleaner and more dangerous, which compliments his aforementioned grappling acumen.
Needs Improvement
Counter-Wrestling Question Marks: The one thing that we are going to need more evidence on for Clancy’s game is his counter-wrestling. While his offensive wrestling is certainly solid, he has yet to be really tested by a wrestling-heavy opponent that can make him uncomfortable. That could be exposed as he moves up levels, especially in the major leagues of MMA where wrestlers are aplenty.
Outlook
UFC Midcarder: At just 23 years old, Clancy has already established himself as a top prospect in Europe and already holds Cage Warriors gold. If he’s this talented now, just imagine when he hits his prime in 4-5 years. He has a solid resume already with not only fights against fighters with decent experience, but also the fact that he’s a finisher. He’s only left the second round one time. With the talent and killer instinct Clancy has, I can’t imagine he doesn’t make the UFC at some point and sees some success.
