Introduction
Saturday, May 16th, Russian featherweight prospect David Mgoyan will be in action for MVP Promotions, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Albert Morales. He will be looking for another win, as Mgoyan looks to make an impression under the “MVP” banner. He represents American Top Team, a top camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Wrestling: Mgoyan was heavily hype for his wrestling coming into his Contender Series bout last year and for good reason. Offensively and defensively, his wrestling is very good. He is quick on the shot and has strong hips when defending a takedown from his opponent. He also has experience in pro grappling and combat jiu-jitsu, which makes sense because he has solid ground-and-pound. He has submission ability, though he has just one submission win to his name.
Hands: On top of that wrestling, Mgoyan is also solid on the feet. He has good movement and solid fundamentals. He has good technique and variety on the feet, though his boxing and hands are the most attractive parts of his striking. He has good power as well, which also aid in him accumulating damage and going for the finish. He tagged Tommy McMillen multiple times in his wild Contender Series fight.
Needs Improvement
Tank: As seen in his Contender Series bout with Tommy McMillen, once he started to fatigue, he really slowed down and it ended up likely being the reason he suffered that close decision loss in that fight. If he’s going to have the output that he does and engage in wild back-and-forth battles or relentlessly blow through energy on numerous takedown attempts, he’s going to have to have even better cardio so he doesn’t tire out.
Outlook
Eventual UFC Fighter: Mgoyan will be competing under the MVP promotional title, so for now he will take his talents there. When it’s all said and done, I don’t think that’s a promotion in which fighter will find consistency or longevity, so this could be a resume-building fight for him. Eventually, I think Mgoyan makes the UFC and given he’s only 21 years old, he has plenty of time. In 4-5 years, Mgoyan is going to be a really good fighter that could eventually turn himself into a contender.
