Introduction
Tuesday, August 11th, Congolese featherweight prospect Ananias Mulumba will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Tom Pagliarulo. He will be looking for another win, as Mulumba looks to inch closer to a UFC. He represents Elite Training Center, a smaller camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Power Striking: As we saw in his Contender Series bout last year and his most recent fight under the UAE Warriors banner, Mulumba has a ton of power, specifically in his hands. In fighting Rahiki, a kickboxer, Mulumba went toe-to-toe with a guy who was a better striker on paper, but Mulumba was able to hurt him a number of times in a wild fight. In his most recent fight with Ahmed Faress, Muluma manhandled him in one round, using his brute power on the feet to score a knockout finish. Beware of Mulumba on the feet, folks.
Aggressive, Front-Foot Style: Mulumba is an all-gas, no-brakes fighter who uses his aggression to keep his opponent on the back foot. He throws punches in bunches and walks down his opponents frequently, looking to score a quick knockout and make his opponents uncomfortable. It has worked for him pretty well thus far in his career.
Needs Improvement
Defensive Grappling: Mulumba’s glaring weakness is going to be his overall grappling, but specifically his defensive grappling. In his bout with Marwan Rahiki, a kickboxer, Mulumba should have outgrappled and handled Rahiki, but he could not finish him on the mat and actually got reversed. He has some submission wins to his name, but against low-level regional talent. That will be the real test here against Pagliarulo, should this fight go to the mat, as Pagliarulo is obviously the better grappler.
Outlook
Regional Contender/Low-Level UFC: If Mulumba wins, he will get into the UFC because they are obviously in the market for African fighters. If he doesn’t, he could get another chance, but I think he’s a regional-level fighter that will have success in those promotions. Should he get in the UFC, Mulumba has a ceiling, especially in a tough division like the featherweight division. That is, unless, the matchmakers stroke him and give him advantageous matchups, as they have done with some other fighters.
