Introduction
Tuesday, September 22nd, Russo-Belgian welterweight prospect Alvi Dasuyev will be in action for Dana White’s Contender Series, where he will be looking continue his winning ways against Jaden Ortega. He will be looking for another win, as Dasuyev looks to secure a UFC contract. He represents Deathrow MMA, a smaller camp in MMA. Let’s take a closer look at this prospect as this week’s “Prospect Spotlight.”
Strengths
Flashy Striking: Dasuyev is a very exciting to watch from the standpoint that he’s not adverse to leave his feet to throw strikes while also being very technical. He has a good mix of Thai techniques using all eight points of the limbs. He has multiple flying strike knockouts, including a brutal flying knee and a highlight reel flying kick in the LFA.Six of his nine wins come by way of knockout, as Dasuyev does have great power in addition to technique.
Submission Wrestling: From an offensive standpoint, Dasuyev has some strong takedowns and top grappling, where he’s able use effective ground-and-pound to inflict damage and stoppages. He has good control and also uses his long arms to get good angles on syncing in chokes. He has more submissions as an amateur, but he still has three as a pro where he showed off his choking prowess.
Needs Improvement
Can Be Outwrestled: It hasn’t been seen as much in his pro career, but during his amateur career, Dasuyev had a couple of losses where he was outwrestled by either bigger or superior grapplers. He hasn’t had as many of those issues since turning pro, but once he gets to the UFC, he is going to see world-class wrestlers who will not be foolish enough to entertain him on the feet. Luckily his takedown defense has improved and he’s tough to get in on with his length and distance control.
Outlook
UFC Top 25: For my many criticisms of the Contender Series roster assembled this year, Alvi Dasuyev is one of the few guys I can legitimately say is going to be an immediate threat when he makes the UFC roster. That said, he has a very tough matchup in Jaden Ortega who will not make it easy. When he does make the welterweight roster, I think he’s a guy that can crack the top 25 and be a tough out for many of the fighters.
